Carb Cravings: Strategies To Block Them Out

As personal trainers, Lindsey and I know all too well how easily carb cravings can kill a client's weight loss efforts! At The Gym of Avon we try to provide members with a multitude of tips and strategies to avoid dietary pitfalls. These 4 great tips will help you deal with the cravings!

1. Eat Regularly...

Waiting too long between meals can cause your blood sugar to drop and poor decisions are only a step behind. Stay ahead of carb cravings by eating at least every 3-4 hours. Eating with this frequency will keep your blood sugar stable and avoid irrational eating behavior!

2. Protein & Healthy Fats...

Protein is the main building block when it comes to increasing muscle tissue, while healthy dietary fat provides long-lasting energy. Making sure these macronutrients are a staple in each meal will ensure a steady release of blood sugar and sustainable energy. Another positive is that carbohydrates are very easy to overeat, not the same case when it comes to proteins and fats. Adopt this tip and start shedding body fat!

3. Chew Gum...

When hit with a strong carb craving, reach for a stick of gum! Dietary research shows that chewing gum can greatly reduce food cravings. It mimics the act of eating while also providing some flavor. Try to choose gum from a health food store, most of their selections are naturally sweetened and contain less preservatives.

4. Plan Quality Snacks...

Poor eating habits seem to stem from poor planning. Like Arnold Schwarzenegger always says; "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail"! Stay ahead of the game by having healthy snacks within reach. Great options are; diced veggies with oil based dressing, trail mix (eat in moderation), organic fresh deli meats wrapped in greens and celery with nut butters. The goal is to consume energy sustaining foods that will carry you to the next meal!
